Parent Updates

đź’— YCC Family Newsletter #9 – February Update đź’—

Dear, dear families of our wonderful YCC kids!

Winter has decided to take a break, but the kids of YCC Forest Lawn and Ogden have NOT! The houses are packed, lively and always fun. We are busier than ever, and please let your kids know that it’s important to follow the rules of: kindness, listening, including others in play, and of looking both ways before running across the street. Oh, and we are not to climb the trees in the park (Ogden) and please say thank you to the staff and volunteers and help with chores. These are the KIDS” HOUSES and we want them to feel a sense of pride, ownership and responsibility to keep the houses open and in good order.

Enough of that! Here are a few things to know!

  • YCC AFTER DARK will take place in the month of March, and will be open to all kids, 12-16, who want to come to YCC to hang out, watch movies, play basketball, foosball, air hockey, have pizza/drinks with our cool staff and university students. It’ll be great to open the doors after hours to the older kids in our cozy houses. They do have to register, but otherwise, it’s drop in, 6pm – 10pm Fridays, March 6, 13, 20 and 27th. Share this with your older kids!
  • Please think about attending our Resume Building event, where kids are taught to create a resume and a great first impression for the job they want. Some of our kids now work at YCC (paid) and it would have been amazing if they’d arrived with resumes. This is FREE to anyone, 12 years old and up,  and will be happening at the Forest Lawn house (2620-40 St. SE) on Friday February 24th from 4pm to 6pm. Please reply to this email to register, or contact sports@youthcentresofcalgary.com.
  • Please remind your kids that YCC is not school, and it’s not a paid program. YCC is a safe and cool place to hang out and do fun things with their friends (and they meet new ones). We have rules – kindness, respect for the centre, prioritizing safety, school and friendships. If they make the choice not to follow the rules, they will be asked to come back when they are ready! Hard line on that, and we do enforce it.
  • Hockey and learn to skate have been outdoor road hockey during the warm weather.
  • Summer camp (free – 8 years and up) registration will start in the spring. It will be summer-long, Monday to Friday from 11am to 3pm at both centres.  Please contact info@youthcentresofcalgary.com in the spring to register your kids.
  • House Phone numbers – iI you want to reach staff or kids at the centre during program hours, please use the new house numbers: Ogden 825-540- 6960 and Forest Lawn: 825-540-6961. Phones will be answered during program hours: Monday – Thursday 2:30pm to 6pm and Friday 12pm to 5pm. My phone number remains the same.
  • We have a TON of baby gear and clothing for babies and toddlers. It’ll be available at the Forest Lawn house on Friday, February 13th from noon until 5pm, until the supply lasts. And don’t forget that both houses have clothing rooms for shopping during program hours! Come by and fill a bag if you like! We are always receiving new things and also have food items. No need to have a registered kid to come by and choose some things.

Thank you for being an important part of a growing community of kids and families who are having fun being at our centres. Call me anytime with questions about our program and feel free to talk to our staff and volunteers about your childrens’ experience.  We are here for you, for our kids and the community. We are humbled by what you are doing as parents and grandparents for your kids. They are all amazing.  We are here to walk beside you.

Warmly and with much thanks,

Xox Jane đź’— đź’—
